Enterprise architecture (architecture d'entreprise)
The collection of strategic information that defines an organization, the information and technologies necessary to operate the organization, and the transitional processes necessary for implementing new technologies in response to the changing needs of the organization.
Information management (gestion de l’information)
Has the same meaning as in the Treasury Board Policy on Information Management.
Information technology (technologie de l’information)
Has the same meaning as in the Treasury Board Directive on Management of Information Technology.
Management of information technology (gestion de la technologie de l’information)
Has the same meaning as in the Treasury Board Directive on Management of Information Technology.

Context

This DAOD, along with the DND and CF IM and IT Policy Framework, provide the strategic context for DND and CF policies, instructions and standards relating to information management (IM), information technology (IT), IT security, enterprise architecture and defence terminology.

Given the assignment of functional areas in respect of IM and IT, the ADM(IM) acts as the Chief Information Officer for purposes of the Treasury Board Operational Security Standard: Management of Information Technology Security.

ADM(IM)

  • establish strategic direction and governance structures, and approve plans and programmes, for IM and IT in the DND and the CF;
  • issue policies, instructions and standards for IM and IT in the DND and the CF, and oversee their compliance;
  • establish IM and IT services and capabilities that align with business and operational objectives, and oversee their management, delivery and maintenance;
  • lead DND and CF coordination, and act as the focal point, for IM and IT with other government departments, agencies and allies;
  • establish an IT security programme as part of a coordinated DND and CF security programme; and
  • lead enterprise architecture and defence terminology.

L1 advisors

  • ensure IM and IT solutions and services are integrated into the enterprise architecture;
  • issue amplifying IM and IT policies, instructions and standards to meet their requirements;
  • oversee compliance in their organizations with DND, CF and L1 advisor policies, instructions and standards relating to IM and IT; and
  • represent the IM and IT interests of their organizations with other government departments, agencies and allies.
