- The collection of strategic information that defines an organization, the information and technologies necessary to operate the organization, and the transitional processes necessary for implementing new technologies in response to the changing needs of the organization.

- Has the same meaning as in the Treasury Board Policy on Information Management.
- Information technology (technologie de l’information)
- Has the same meaning as in the Treasury Board Directive on Management of Information Technology.

Policy Direction
Context
This DAOD, along with the DND and CF IM and IT Policy Framework, provide the strategic context for DND and CF policies, instructions and standards relating to information management (IM), information technology (IT), IT security, enterprise architecture and defence terminology.
Given the assignment of functional areas in respect of IM and IT, the ADM(IM) acts as the Chief Information Officer for purposes of the Treasury Board Operational Security Standard: Management of Information Technology Security.
Policy Statement
The DND and the CF are committed to using a collaborative approach to:
- ensure the efficient and effective use of IM and IT;
- support IM and IT priorities, programme delivery and increased productivity; and
- manage IT security activities.
Requirements
The DND and the CF must:
- apply the IM and IT policies, directives and standards of the Government of Canada in order to:
- promote interoperability with other government departments and agencies;
- support international obligations with allies; and
- ensure CF operational success in and outside Canada;
- manage information and its associated technologies in accordance with the IM and IT policies, directives and standards of the Government of Canada;
- establish DND- and CF-wide strategic direction and governance structures for IM and IT;
- integrate IM and IT investment plans into level one (L1) advisor business plans;
- use common or shared IM and IT assets and services to avoid duplication;
- measure performance relating to the management of IM and IT on an ongoing basis;
- represent all functional areas set out in DAOD 1000-0, Corporate Administrative Direction, in the enterprise architecture; and
- safeguard IT infrastructure, assets and services from compromise.
